Chelsea Cooks! Recipe Contest – now thru 10/14

As part of the Smithsonian and Michigan Humanities Council exhibit that explores how food connects to our lives and culture, the Chelsea District Library is hosting a contest to find winning recipes with at least one Michigan grown ingredient, along with a short story to explain the history or importance of the recipe. Chelsea-Dexter Crop Walk - 10/1

The 18th annual CROP event involves Chelsea and Dexter residents participating in a 1- or 5-mile walk to help raise money to alleviate hunger and poverty. It begins at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Chelsea. To participate, call (734) 475-9643, or register on the day of the event at St. Paul's church.

Quakers and the Underground Railroad, Then and Now - 10/1

Learn about the history of the Underground Railroad from an African-American and a Quaker whose family has historical ties to the "runaway assistance program". Dwight Wilson, headmaster of Detroit Friends School, will lead a discussion of this volatile piece of American history and its relevance to multicultural efforts today. Rep. Byrnes Announces Coffee Hour - 10/2

State Representative Pam Byrnes (D-Lyndon Township) will hold a coffee hour from 10 til 11 a.m. at the Washington Street Education Center. Rep. Byrnes will discuss the latest issues in Lansing and meet and talk with constituents about issues they feel are important. This informal, free event is open to the public. Pioneer Day - 10/8

The Waterloo Area Historical Society hosts its annual Pioneer Day from noon to 5 p.m. The celebration of late 19th century farm life includes tours, live music, and demonstrations of crafts, trades, and traditional cooking methods. Step back in time to the 1880’s and learn about the way of life familiar to the Michigan farmer in the second half of the 19th century. 15 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME WILL HELP DETERMINE THE FUTURE OF CHELSEA! The City of Chelsea Planning Commission invites you to the Master Plan Open House. Join us anytime between 4 and 7 p.m. (stay as long as you like) on Tuesday, October 17 at the Washington Street Education Center Board Room. This is an important planning tool for the future of our City, and your input is very important.

Visit interactive stations to view information on the Master Plan process, identify issues, review initial concepts, ask questions and give input. Discuss goals, future land use, residential design guidelines, downtown land use, greenbelts and City entryways, open space, street width and transportation system. Members of the Planning Commission and consultant team will be available throughout the evening to hear your comments and questions. Chelsea Farmer's Markets in October - 10/26 & 10/28 (last chance til spring!)

As we say good by to the growing season, be sure to stop by the Farmer's Market for one last look before spring. It's a great place to pick up your Halloween pumpkins for carving (or eating!) as well as many other seasonal favorites. The harvests in October include mums and winter flowers, small shrubs and trees, apples, pumpkins, gourds, beets, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrots, celery, cranberries, chard, garlic, herbs, kohlrabi, leeks, onions, parsnips, peppers, potatoes, radishes, spinach, winter squash.

Haunted Attraction: "Pigman's Lair" - last weekend!

This scary and fun haunted attraction will be held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday in October. At "Pigman's Lair" you'll meet lots of creepy characters, manimals, clowns, and more in this truly terrifying experience!  Also features a smaller, toned-down "Piglet's Lair" show for young kids. Even if you think you're not in a disaster-prone area, many emergency situations like wind storms, blizzards, tornadoes, overturned tankers or power outages, can strike quickly and with little or no warning and affect your home, work or school. This class will give you the information you need to prepare to keep your family safe. Halloween Trick or Treating - 10/31

Trick or treating in Chelsea will take place on Halloween from 4 til 6:00 p.m. Afterwards, the Chelsea Kiwanis provide a party for children in the parking lot behind the Common Grill.
