She stopped with traffic in a construction zone on I-94 near Jackson. A driver smashed into her car, and Christy became one of the more than 1,000 people killed each year in the nation's highway work zones. State Representative Pam Byrnes recently introduced legislation, House Bills 5506 (click to read full text) and 5507 (click to read full text) , that would extend penalties for all accidents occurring in a construction zone, regardless of whether a construction worker is involved. She did so after Gutekunst's best friend, Sara Jean Nelson, lobbied State Representatives to pass laws that would crack down on those who drive recklessly in work zones. "There are stiff penalties in place for those who injure or kill construction workers in work zones," Byrnes said. "If Christy had been a construction worker, the man who killed her could have received up to 15 years in prison and a $7,500 fine. My bills broaden the laws to apply to anyone driving recklessly who injures or kills another person in a construction zone." Source: Pam Byrnes e-newsletter. What is all that construction on I-94 in Chelsea?Have you been wondering about that construction on I-94, west of Chelsea? They are putting in a new rest area to replace the one near the Baker Rd. exit. Our City Manager has more details on his blog. Don't ignore those snowy sidewalks!Just a reminder that it is your responsibility -- not the city's -- to remove ice and snow on the sidewalks in front of your house within 48 hours after it accumulates. Some people may forget about this ordinance because they don't use their own sidewalks. But there are many kids walking to school, the mail carriers and delivery people, not to mention your neighbors who walk out of necessity or enjoyment. Besides, if you don't clear your own sidewalk, the city may do it for you and subsequently send you a bill. If you are unable to do it yourself, I'm guessing it would be cheaper to ask a neighbor or hire a teenager to do it for you. |
