Chelsea named "Best Small Town" in 2006 Readers Choice Awards

For the second year in a row, the city of Chelsea was chosen as "Best Small Town" in the Ann Arbor News Annual Readers Choice Awards. What does this mean? Pretty much what we already know -- Chelsea is a great place to visit and a great place to live. The award just gives us a few more bragging rights (and a nifty trophy at the city offices, too!).

The awards for Chelsea include:

  • City of Chelsea (Gold, "Best Small Town")
  • Cottage Inn Pizza (Gold, "Best Pizza"; Silver "Best Carryout")
  • Common Grill (Gold, "Best Restaurant Outside Ann Arbor")
  • Purple Rose Theatre (Silver, "Best Place for Live Theatre")

Chelsea Honored for Promoting a Physically Active Community

The City of Chelsea recently received a bronze level award from The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness. The 2006 Promoting Active Communities Award is given to communities who have made a commitment to provide and promote an environment where the people who live here are encouraged to be more physically active.

Why did Chelsea receive this award? I am not in the official loop, but I can venture to guess some of the reasons:

  • Waterloo Recreation Area - plenty of trails for hiking, biking, walking, swimming, skiing, etc. There are also other parks and playgrounds in Chelsea.
  • Healthy Communities Walking Program - a great group for residents in the area (and it's FREE), and they provide walking route maps for anyone who would like them
  • Chelsea Health and Wellness Center - beautiful facility is used both for physical therapy patients and as a fitness center for area residents to join
  • Chelsea Recreation and Chelsea Community Ed - both offer many opportunities to join a sports team, learn a new activity like yoga or dancing, or join a fitness group. Visit our Stuff to Learn page for others.
  • Plenty of places in Chelsea to go have fun and be active, such as ice skating, swimming, golfing, dancing and more. See our Places to Go page for some of these locations.
  • Safe sidewalks in the downtown area as well as neighborhood streets - they are well cared for and we also have very little crime here in Chelsea.

Chelsea's Bronze award gives us recognition as a community that has "taken important steps toward making it easy for people to be active." As a resident who strives to be physically active myself, I whole heartedly agree that Chelsea does a good job in providing opportunities to exercise. For other information:

The new McKune Memorial Library is Open!

Chelsea's new library, McKune Memorial Library, opened to the public on November 13, 2006. I visited the new library for the first time during the Hometown Holidays weekend, and must agree with the consensus... it's awesome! Great job to everyone involved in this major upgrade to both our library and our downtown area.

Reminder of Snow Removal Ordinance

[From City of Chelsea website] The City has a snow removal ordinance which addresses the responsibility of property owners within the City to remove snow and ice from pedestrian sidewalks. It is the responsibility of property owners to remove accumulation of snow or ice within 48 hours. Your assistance in making the sidewalks safer during the winter season for our pedestrians is appreciated.
