Freecycling items that are still useful

There is a great trend across the country called freecycling, and Chelsea has its own group, called Chelsea Recycle (formerly Chelsea Freecycle). The concept is simple. You have a perfectly good item you no longer need, and you post an on-line message letting people know it's available. You then choose a recipient and arrange pick up. It saves countless items from going to the landfill, and helps you declutter!

Wait! Before you throw that in the trash....

For items you might normally throw out, such as batteries, old bikes, carpets, outdated computers, etc. check out these links for drop off locations, proper disposal tips, and suggestions for reusing, regiving or refurbishing.

Reducing Home Toxics

So, you can't throw it away because it's toxic, you can't recycle it, and no one else wants it. How do you dispose of toxic trash such as motor oil, fluorescent light tubes, oil based stains, etc.? Most household toxic trash can be brought to the Home Toxics Reduction Center at 705 N. Zeeb Road (just north of exit 169 on I-94).

Public Transportation

Using public transportation is a great way to save your money and the earths resources.

  • The WAVE. (Western-Washtenaw Area Value Express). Offering door-to-door rides within Chelsea and Dexter, and connecting to the #9 AATA bus (see below). The cost is $1.50 - $2.00 for senior citizens and handicapped individuals, and $3 to $4 for everyone else. Call (734) 475-9494 for more information.
  • AATA - "The Ride" from Ann Arbor comes almost out to Chelsea, but not quite. But you can connect to the AATA via the WAVE and then get just about anywhere you want in the area.
